Booked in for a towbar? Here’s what to know before you drop the car off

A towbar fitting is one of the most common jobs we do, and a bit of prep on your end makes the day smoother for everyone. Here's what we suggest before you bring the car in.

Know what you'll be towing

The towbar isn't one-size-fits-all. A light box trailer, a boat, a camper or a big caravan all ask different things of the bar, the wiring and the vehicle. Let us know what you plan to tow and roughly how heavy it is loaded, so we fit the right setup. If your plans might grow, say you're eyeing off a caravan in a year or two, tell us that too.

Have your vehicle details handy

Make, model, year and body type all matter, because towbars are made to suit specific vehicles. Your rego or VIN helps us confirm the exact fitment. Some vehicles have a few variants that look the same from the outside but need a different bar.

Check your vehicle's towing limits

Your owner's manual and vehicle placard list the towing capacity and the maximum towball download. A towbar can't raise those limits. The lowest of the vehicle, towbar and tow ball ratings is what you have to stay under. If you're not sure what the numbers mean, have a read of our towing limits post or ask us on the day.

Think about wiring

Your trailer plug needs to match the socket on the car. Common types include the 7-pin flat, 7-pin round and 12-pin. Many modern vehicles also need a wiring module that talks to the car's electronics so the trailer lights work properly and the car's systems know a trailer is hooked up. If you'll be towing something with electric brakes, you'll also need a brake controller fitted. Mention it when you book so we can sort it in the same visit.

Empty the boot

We often need to get behind the rear trim to run wiring, so please clear out the boot or tray area before you arrive. It saves time and means none of your gear gets moved around.

Sensors, cameras and accessories

If your car has parking sensors, a reversing camera or a rear bumper accessory, let us know. Some setups need a little extra work around the bar, and some vehicles need a setting changed so the sensors behave with a trailer on.

Allow enough time

Most fittings are done the same day, but it depends on the vehicle and the wiring. We'll give you a time estimate when you book, so you can plan your day or wait in comfort.

Ask us anything

Not sure about tow ball heights, weight distribution hitches or sway control for a caravan? Ask. We'd much rather answer questions before you hit the road than after. Give us your vehicle details and what you're towing and we'll put together an estimate for the bar and wiring.
